Elementary: Sherlock Holmes, Watson reunite in Season 3 of TV show

Elementary has taken a surreal series of plot twists and turns in Season 3, from Watson moving out of Sherlock Holmes’ brownstone, to the arrival of Kitty Winter to take her place, to the subsequent departure of Kitty, to the (recent spoiler alert) murder of Watson’s boyfriend. But after all the whirlwind, the CBS TV show has managed to put its main two chess pieces back on the board as they’ve always been. Now we get to find out how long they stay there.

Viewers risked whiplash as Elementary went from lining up Sherlock Holmes and Kitty to the point that it wasn’t clear within the storyline whether Watson was even going to stick around. But the Kitty storyline wrapped up with her getting her revenge and then bolting for London. Almost too conveniently, Watson’s boyfriend died shortly thereafter, motivating her to re-up with Sherlock in the Brownstone after all. Though the latest episode “When Your Number’s Up” ultimately established that she would be taking part time residence in the basement, so as to keep some nominal separation in place. The catch: Moriarty was briefly reintroduced along the way, in the most low key of ways, and she’ll soon be back to shake things up.

But the writers for Elementary Season 3, having finally reestablished the status quo for Sherlock and Watson, will have to decide just how long they want to keep things that way before finding a way to drive a new psychological or physical wedge between the two partners in crime solving. Our guess is Moriarty returns later in the season to create new tension, but viewers will have to wait and see.

87th Oscars tonight: Academy Awards 2015 time, TV channel, live stream

It’s Oscar 2015 time. The 87th annual Academy Awards are taking place tonight at the Dolby Theater, with the usual pomp and circumstance. The entirety of Hollywood Boulevard has been shut down from Highland to La Brea all week to make room for the red carpet arrivals, the bleachers, even a ferris wheel. But now it’s time for the big night, with the awards show airing on a prominent TV channel as well as a live stream online option.

Neil Patrick Harris is handling Academy Awards hosting duties tonight, and several movies are considered favorites. Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel are each nominated for nine Oscars, while The Imitation Game is up for eight trophies. There will be several musical performances including Lady Gaga and Adam Levine among others, and the show will attempt to keep everything within the three hours of allotted time by playing off the longer speeches with increasingly loud music as per usual.

Tonight’s 87th Academy Awards have a start time of 8:30pm eastern time, 5:30pm pacific time, and are airing on TV channel ABC. The Oscars are also available as a live stream online.

Backstrom ratings slide, Rainn Wilson FOX TV show seeks religion

Backstrom ratings are plummeting badly enough that the FOX TV show might need divine intervention to avoid getting cancelled, and now the Rainn Wilson show is turning to religion - literally - to turn things around. The latest episode titled Bogeyman took the ongoing minor plotline of Detective John Almond (Dennis Haysbert) also being a preacher and put the issue front and center, and one has to wonder if that’s about to become a trend.

While Backstrom put itself behind the eight ball out of the gate by making its main character the kind of brilliant-but-inappropriate antihero that’s been overused of late, the show gets points for coming up with something as unique as a police detective who also preaches on Sundays. It was always a question of just how much of a focus the latter would become. Bogeyman had the church being nearly foreclosed on, and then ultimately saved by TV audiences who saw Almond in action saving a kidnapped girl. Could this be an intentional metaphor by the writers, who are hoping that their real world viewers will find a way to bail the show out of its ratings slide?

Then again, the biggest vulnerability for this show has always been that its main character, who was initially painted as wholly devoid of any redeeming qualities, was going to struggle keeping a wide audience of viewers who want at least one shard of likability to grasp onto. This latest episode ended with Backstrom falling to the ground in tears after learning that the kidnap victims were still alive. It was the first time we’ve seen him care about anything other than the drive of simply solving a case - and more flashes of that might be what the show needs in order to survive.
