Stan Lee is now too ill to travel. Here are his top three Marvel movie cameos.

With one comic book event in Arizona announcing that Stan Lee’s scheduled appearance has been canceled because he’s physically unable to travel, the realization is slowly setting in among Marvel fans that the ninety year old comic legend won’t be with us forever. Thankfully, there is absolutely nothing to suggest that Mr. Lee’s health is failing irreparably – in fact just today he was tweeting about a local event he plans to attend in February. But now may be a good time to take a gander at just what all Stan Lee has meant to us. The short of it is that he co-created Spider-Man, X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and much of the Avengers universe. Alongside that monumental historical resume, he still makes a point of making cameos in most of the modern Marvel movies. In that light, here’s a look at our favorite three cameos…

3) Iron Man: Decked out with a robe and a pipe while surrounded by beautiful younger women at a big media event, Stan meets Tony Stark – who promptly confuses him for Hugh Hefner. Honorable mention for Iron Man 2, where Stark confuses a suspenders-clad Stan for Larry King.

2) Thor: Yeah, the movie may be the weak link in the modern Avengers saga. But one of the highlights of the film is when townspeople take turns trying to move Thor’s hammer when they find it in the desert. Stan tries to pull it with a pickup truck, which tears the truck in half. Unfazed, Stan smiles and asks “Did it work?”…

1) Willie Lumpkin in Fantastic Four: This cameo gets the top spot because it’s the only time Stan has portrayed one his own characters. He put on the Postal Service uniform to play mailman Willie Lumpkin in the first Fantastic Four movie in 2005. In the Fantastic Four sequel, Stan tries to get into the wedding between Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, but finds that he’s not on the guest list.
