Apple’s October 16th Media Event is now official, with the company confirming its existence via private press invites and a public live video stream. The new 2014 iPads are expected to debut, but there will be plenty more to come from the event as well. The iPod touch 6th generation is still waiting in the wings, iOS 8.1 is just around the corner, the Apple Watch could see more details, and other new products could be part of the occasion as well. Here’s a look at what to expect, and what not to expect, at the 10/16/2014 event.
New iPads: Bank on Apple introducing a new iPad Air and a new iPad mini, as the current models have been on the market for nearly a year and are now due for the annual upgrade cycle. Details on both new product lines have been sketchy, but the smart bet is on the Air seeing only an evolutionary revision while the mini could be turned on its end. There’s also been scattered talk of an iPad Pro, but it’s never sounded like a real product to our ear.
iPod touch 6th generation: The current iPod touch 5m model has been around for about two years now, and Apple will have to update it eventually unless it plans to phase it out entirely, which was originally intended as a transitional product to begin with. Our guess is the iPod touch 6 does indeed surface on Oct 16th. The biggest issue is whether it grows in size to match that of the new iPhones, or whether it perhaps ditches its “iPod” name in favor becoming part of the iPad tablet lineup.
iOS 8.1: Apple will offer a new version of the iOS 8 system software to go along with its new iPad hardware. Whether that’s iOS 8.1, which is still in beta testing, or an evolutionary update like iOS 8.0.3, remains to be seen.
Apple Watch The company has already made clear that the Apple Watch won’t ship til 2015, so while it could reveal more details and updates regarding the product, don’t look for it to become available for sale during this event.
