Dallas Cowboys offseason: Adrian Peterson clears final hurdle

The Dallas Cowboys have made no secret of their desire for Adrian Peterson, the troubled but talented running back currently the purview of the Minnesota Vikings. They’d be willing to give up a good deal in order to acquire him, as they believe he’s the missing piece in their current Super Bowl window, after having lost DeMarco Murray in high priced free agency takes. And now the final NFL hurdle has been cleared in terms of making the trade happen.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has formally reinstated Adrian Peterson, who had been on the indefinite suspension list since it surfaced that he used a tree branch to beat his young son, leaving visible bruises and igniting a nationwide controversy. But this week Goodell decided that Peterson wouldn’t have to miss any additional time in the 2015 season after having miss most of last year’s campaign. That means he’s once again an active player, meaning the Dallas Cowboys can officially pursue him.

Of course, just because the last NFL hurdle has been cleared, it doesn’t mean the Vikings are going to be willing to actually part with him. Thus far they’ve flatly stated they won’t trade him, which could either be a statement of fact or a positioning posture in the hopes of getting more from the Dallas Cowboys in the eventual trade. That much won’t become clear until closer to draft day. But for now, at the least, Adrian Peterson is once again an active non-suspended player who can in fact be traded. And that should be enough to get the Cowboys into wheeling and dealing mode.
