Tyrion Lannister is in trouble now that (spoiler alert: don’t keep reading if you haven’t watched the latest episode of Game of Thrones) the Mountain has killed the Red Viper in a gruesome head-squishing battle, leaving fans of the HBO TV show asking themselves whether Tyrion is about to be killed off himself as season four progresses. The odds certainly don’t appear to be in his favor, making fans worried that they’ll see two of the “good guys” die in successive episodes.
But because the Game of Thrones storyline is written in advance in the books by George R.R. Martin, such questions can be rather definitively answered ahead of time.. if you really want to know those answers. Don’t read the next paragraph below unless you want to know whether Tyrion Lannister lives or dies.
Spoliers herein: According to the books that Game of Thrones is based on, Tyrion Lannister will escape death in a jailbreak at the last minute and will in fact survive through season four. That means series star Peter Dinklage will continue portraying the Tyrion character on HBO, and fans won’t have to weep over the loss of yet another beloved character. But there’s more to the Tyrion story coming – much more, and it’ll be highly controversial in its own right. Once again, more Game of Thrones spoilers coming in the next paragraph.
By the time Game of Thrones season four is over (last warning: major long term spoilers coming next), Tyrion will have caught Shae in his father’s bed and he’ll end up killing them both. In other words, the show will continue to keep delivering the medieval violence, gore and death it’s become famous for. It’s just that instead of Tyrion being killed off, he’ll end up being the one doing some killing of his own.
