With so much focus on the next iPhone, it’s easy to forget that Apple is also updating its other three mobile product lines this year as well. The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are set to arrive as Apple’s new tablet computers, and the sixth generation iPod touch 6 is also coming down the pike. But the nature of such product revisions, the release date for each, and the viability of the rumors floating around each of the three new products has been up for debate. Here’s what we think we know about the new iPad, iPad mini, and iPod touch coming in 2014.
iPod touch 6
Apple will tie the design and the release date of the iPod touch six to that of the iPhone 6. Expect them to debut at the same time and look similar to each other (aside from perhaps the color schemes), just as happened two years ago with the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5. That means if the new iPhone does indeed come with a larger screen, expect the sixth generation iPod touch to do the same. If one has curved sides, the other will as well. And while the new iPhone is expected to get thinner, one has to wonder if the iPod touch can get any thinner. Look for its release date in the August to September range.
iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3
Apple’s iPad Air last year was a radical redesign of its original iPod motif, getting thinner and svelter in the process. The iPad Air 2 will inherit whatever leftover intended new features and design flourishes that Apple intended for the original Air but couldn’t pull off in time, and may get even thinner as components continue to get miniaturized. The iPad mini 3 could represent a major redesign, as last year’s iPad mini 2 was largely just the original mini with more powerful components and a better looking screen stuffed into it. The release date for both new iPads, if Apple’s recent patterns hold, will come at a press event about a month after the iPhone-iPod touch event. Think September 2014.
