iPod touch 6th generation release date: Apple Event in 2015

The iPod touch 6th generation is the subject of increasing focus from those who still view the iPod touch as their mobile device of choice, but Apple is increasingly showing that the product is not among its priorities. There have been three Apple Events in the past six months, and none of them included the iPod 6 launch, meaning that the 5th gen model has now been on the market for two and a half years. But there is still every reason to expect it to change in 2015.

In fact the core issue at this point is whether Apple debuts the iPod touch 6th generation now or holds off until the next iPhone event in the fall. Launching now presents two problems. One is that Apple can’t hold a separate Media Event just to roll out the iPod 6, meaning it would have to be launched via mere press release. That can be done, as the relatively few who still care about the iPod touch would certainly find out about it without the need for a large stage introduction.

However the second issue is more complex. If Apple launches the iPod touch 6th generation now, it can’t include the iPhone 6S-era specs that won’t surface until the fall. That means any new iPod touch launched right now will instead be saddled with the iPhone 6-era specs which are already half a year old. And with Apple’s penchant for leaving its iPod touch models on the market for a few years, that would make it obsolete rather quickly. So the best move at this point all involved may be to hold the iPod touch 6th generation release date until the fall so it can be given better tech specs.
