Say this for Jimmy Fallon: he gives the people what they want. This time he delivered a drum-off between actor Will Ferrell and his lookalike doppelganger, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The two men look enough alike that Smith has been seen wearing a T-shirt reading “I’m not Will Ferrell” during RHCP performances, and on the Tonight Show last night they were both dressed identically as they appeared on the Fallon couch together and pretended to be each other during the interview segment. But then they shifted to the drums, and the evening became full of surprises.
Surprise number one: Will Ferrell can actually play the drums. While he was no match for the stick work of Smith, Ferrell laid down a series of drum solos which made clear that he has a talent for the instrument. Surprise number two: Chad Smith displaying some acting chops, playing right into the faux feud between the two men. Surprise number three: Fallon gives the people what they want again, as he brandishes a cowbell in a reenactment of his famous Saturday Night Live “gotta have more cowbell” sketch. Surprise number four: the other RHCP members appear on stage to help Farrell perform a “Don’t Fear The Reaper” reenactment from the cowbell sketch.
Despite an obviously superior drum performance from Chad Smith, Fallon comically named Will Ferrell the winner of the drum-off due to his use of the crowd pleasing cowbell. Ferrell appears to be an equal opportunity crowd pleaser when it comes to late night talk shows. He performed during the closing musical segment on Conan O’Brien’s final Tonight Show episode, and now he’s helping out Fallon on the Tonight Show as well. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have just one scheduled tour appearance this year, at the Isle of Wight Festival.
