Lorde’s swift rise to worldwide fame this year has introduced her to the world of the paparazzi, professional photographer-stalkers for hire, and she’s found a unique way to deal with one stalker who’s been giving her particular grief. His name is Simon Runting, and Lorde wants to make sure her fans know it, as she took to Twitter to attack Runting by name, claiming that his attempts at photographing her private moments have driven her to a feeling of “extreme fear.” In other words, the Team singer is saying that this particular guy is definitely not on her team.
“I understand that this comes with the territory,” Lorde stated regarding Runting’s attempts at getting close to her in order to take photos and sell them to the tabloids. “I do not understand why I should be complacent.” What makes things perhaps different here than in some other paparazzi stalking cases is that Lorde is an underage female, still only seventeen. At a time when most girls her age are attending high school, Lorde is dealing with the pros and cons of major fame. But she’s standing up for the rights of everyone who’s been followed by Runting, going so far as to post pictures that he took of Rihanna through her hotel room window as evidence that he’s gone too far.
Lorde has seen her popularity in the music industry come fast and furious in 2014. She broke through with major radio hit song Royals and followed it up with an equally big hit in Team. She was also invited to perform as Nirvana’s lead singer when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month. But no matter how public her life has become, she’s having none of paparazzi invasiveness. “This should not be an accepted standard for young women or anyone in this industry,” she said while posting a link to Runting’s Facebook page in an attempt to send him a dose of his own medicine. “I refuse to stay passive about men systematically subjecting me to extreme fear.”
