The New England Patriots take on the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship football game, and intrigue abounds on several levels. Bill Belichick is trying to win one more Super Bowl before Tom Brady retires and he has to find a new franchise quarterback. Brady is looking to gain one more ring and prove he’s not washed up. Andrew Luck is on a quest to prove he’s the best young QB in the game. And that’s before getting to the fact that this is an old rivalry or the new accusations of cheating.
Tom Brady appeared to be on a downward slide at the start of this season, but he’s since almost single handedly turned around the New England Patriots offense and has the team in true contention for the first time in a few years. At age 37 he won’t have many chances left, adding to the sense of urgency. Andrew Luck is still at the beginning of his career, and has shown that the Indianapolis Colts made the right decision by jettisoning Peyton Manning in favor of him. That gives a new take on the old Patriots vs Colts rivalry of a the previous decade, which was always about quarterbacks back then as well. This comes even as the Ravens have suggested that Belichick’s four-man offensive line formations used in the playoffs are cheating, and raises the issue of whether we’ll see the Pats use them in this game as well.
The New England Patriots vs Indianapolis Colts AFC Championship NFL football game takes place on the evening of Sunday, January 18th.
