iPad Air 3 & iPad mini 4: release date, Apple event, Pro model

Apple has set the date for its media event to launch its new smartphone lineup, and it appears the company’s new tablet lineup will arrive alongside it. That means the iPad Air 3 and the iPad mini 4 are set for their 2015 debut, at a time when overall tablet sales have plateaued and Apple is looking to jumpstart things with its new models. And then of course there is the matter of the iPod Pro model as well.

The first issue for Apple is whether these new iPads will debut with the brand names that everyone is expecting. The “Air” and “mini” monikers have both grown long in the tooth, and it’s conceivable Apple will use this debut as an opportunity to rebrand both of them. Based on the company’s history, names like “iPad Pro” and “iPad nano” are possibilities. In fact there is some scattered buzz that the iPad Pro will be an entirely separate model with a larger form factor and more professional oriented features, though it’s not clear that such a market truly exists. But we’ll find out soon.

It appears Apple is opting to debut its iPad and iPhone models at the same event, breaking from its previous tradition of holding an iPhone event in September and an iPad event in October. The next event is officially scheduled for September 9th, so the release date for the iPad Air 3 and iPad mini 4 – or whatever they end up being called – could come as soon as ten days from now.
