HBO Now on Apple TV, pricing, new Game of Thrones trailer

HBO Now has debuted at today’s Apple Event, allowing customers with any Apple device to subscribe to the HBO television channels without the need for a cable or satellite subscription. The CEO of HBO took the stage to introduce the new pricing plan, allowing users to “cut the cord” of traditional television – and he showed off a trailer for the new season of Game of Thrones as well – even as Apple’s Tim Cook showed off the new Apple TV hardware.

The pricing for HBO Now will be $14.95 per month and can only be watched exclusively on an Apple device, at least for now. It’s part of a larger trend of content providers shifting their offerings toward the digital world and attempting to figure out how to profit from their content online accordingly.

The new Apple TV hardware will cost $69, reduced from the previous $99 price. This is an attempt at competing with lesser priced set top boxes from competitors. However there was no mention of the long awaited Apple television sets, which may have to wait until the fall. As for the Game of Thrones trailer, it’s clear that the Lannister clan is in for yet more violence when the new season begins on HBO Now.
