2016: iPhone 7 release date, Apple Watch 2, iOS X plans

The iPhone 7 release date is the centerpiece for Apple’s plans for what will end up being one of its most ambitious calendar years to date. Alongside it will arrive the Apple Watch 2.0, the first iteration to include legitimate medical tracking data, along with a landmark iOS 10 update. And that’s before even getting to the iPad models involved, or new product lines like the iCar. The good news: the year should include something for everyone. The bad news: we’re not talking about this year.

So just what will the iPhone 7 deliver? Apple decided to throw away a four-year-long blueprint with the iPhone 6, starting over completely when it came to external styling and screen size and rules about features vs geometry (see that camera bump as proof of willingness to compromise in the name of function). And those changes were met with major reward, as sales have exploded to set records and turn the tide in the smartphone marketshare wars. That’s a signal to Apple that the iPhone 7 release date must bring changes which are just as obvious to even the most pedestrian of buyers.

Don’t look for screen sizes to shift much from the current 4.7, which is very popular, and the 5.5, which is somewhat popular. But look for the somewhat understated design of the iPhone 6 to give way to something more signature with the iPhone 7. The rounded sides may stay, for instance, but look for them to take different angles. And the gold-silver-white motif should finally be put to rest. But the bigger changes will come in the form of internal features. The most significant will be greater integration with the Apple Watch, even as version 2.0 launches.

The first generation Watch is debuting without some of the rumored advanced medical functionality, meaning it got pushed back to the second generation due to time constraints on development. That makes Apple Watch 2.0 the one that power-users will be waiting for. Throw in iOS 10, whose new features at this point are entirely unpredictable, and it makes for a banner year. But just when will those release dates land?

The Apple Watch 2.0 will arrive no later than April 2016, one year after the launch of the first model. The iPhone 7 release date is more variable. If the iPhone 6S sells as well as the 6, then the 7 should arrive in September 2016 as per custom. But if 6S sales slag, Apple can move the iPhone 7 up to April alongside the Watch 2. And look for iOS 10 to arrive alongside the iPhone.
