Miami Dolphins fire coach Joe Philbin: Dan Campbell interim coach for rest of 2015 schedule

The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Joe Philbin just four games into the 2015 schedule, and have taken the unusual step of not promoting either of their existing coordinators to interim coach. Instead that title goes to tight ends coach Dan Campbell, who is still in his thirties and has been handed the reins to a team which started just 1-3 despite a talent upgrade on both sides of the ball during the offseason. So what can fans expect at this point?

First, expect a cleaning of house. With both defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle and offensive coordinator Bill Lazer being passed over for the interim job in favor of someone further down the ladder with very little experience, it’s a clear vote of no-confidence for both coordinators. Will either still be on the sideline by the time the Miami Dolphins play their next scheduled game in two weeks? That has not yet been announced. But it’s clear that this is now Dan Campbell’s show, and some changes will be immediate.

In his introductory press conference today, Dan Campbell said that he intends to make practices more tough and physical in order to infuse a sense of urgency into what had been a listless team in each of its four games this season. Joe Philbin had a career losing record with the Miami Dolphins and never made the playoffs. Fans will have to hope that Campbell can do better, even though he’s inheriting a 1-3 hole.
