Will Miami Dolphins keep Mike Wallace? Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson gone

The Miami Dolphins are keeping Mike Wallace, at least for now, after dumping two other key wide receivers ahead of the 2015 free agency period. Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson, two solid but unspectacular receivers who each started for the team at various points, have both been cut due to oversized salaries in what will be a crowded field at the position. But could the double-move be a signal that the Dolphins are gearing up to retain Mike Wallace after all?

Miami has leaked its efforts to trade Mike Wallace, who while productive in 2015, is also overpaid and has clashed with head coach Joe Philbin. Those efforts predictably went nowhere, to the point that the Ravens made a point of publicly lampooning the oversized contract given to Wallace by former Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland, who was forced out of the job shortly thereafter. Wallace has stated that he has no intention of taking a pay cut, and if he’s released, he could get as much money from another team as the Dolphins are offering him in a restructure.

But even with all of the above, it seemed a given that Miami would keep one of its three core veteran receivers, to be paired as a starter alongside young phenom Jarvis Landry. Dumping Gibson and Hartline means that Mike Wallace is the only starting-caliber veteran wide receiver the Dolphins have left. They may be banking on getting one of the two guys they just cut back at a lower price, as they won’t be hot commodities on the open market. Or it could be that the team has decided, despite all the hassles, that Wallace is worth more than Hartline and Gibson combined.
