The Atlanta Falcons took on the Jacksonville Jaguars tonight in their final football game on the NFL preseason schedule, with one team ready to count on its franchise quarterback to take it back to the playoffs, and the other officially opting to keep its franchise QB on the shelf for the season. The Jags say they’re starting veteran journeyman Chad Henne over first round rookie Blake Bortles, even as Bortles stated his case yet again tonight. But the final score was decided primarily by the second quarter.
Matt Ryan looked strong in his previous outing for Atlanta, and remains the team’s best hope for bouncing back from a bad season in 2013. But TJ Yates had a strong outing tonight, going fifteen for twenty with two touchdown scores, allowing the Falcons to feel safer about the backup QB position. Jacksonville sat Chad Henne tonight, but only gave Blake Bortles brief playing time as he went four for six with one touchdown score. Neither Morris nor Stanzi did much to make the case for winning the third string Jags QB job.
The Atlanta Falcons were the winner tonight over the Jacksonville Jaguars by a final score of 24-14 thanks to a pair of touchdowns before halftime. The next game on the Falcons schedule is the season opener at home against the New Orleans Saints next Sunday afternoon, while the next game on the schedule for the Jaguars is at the Philadelphia Eagles, also on Sunday.
