The Philadelphia Eagles head into the NFL Draft with one eye on quarterback Marcus Mariota, for several reasons, despite the fact that he’ll be long gone before they make their first round pick. That means a trade is in order, if the Eagles can pull it off - and that comes down to a matter of how much head coach Chip Kelly is willing to give up in order to acquire his former college quarterback. Here’s a look at how the Eagles nab Marcus Mariota.
Start with the fact that the Tennessee Titans, holders of the number two overall pick, aren’t totally sold on Marcus Mariota and don’t appear to even be certain they need a quarterback. That means the pick can be had for the right price. The Philadelphia Eagles are in a tougher negotiating position than some other franchises such as the Jets, who have a higher first round pick to offer in return. But what the Eagles do have is the desperation factor. Kelly is now in charge of personnel, and he’s also one bad year away from being fired.
That means the Philadelphia Eagles will be willing to mortgage the future if necessary in order to get Marcus Mariota. Look for a package which includes the Eagles first and second round picks this season, their first round pick next season, possibly Sam Bradford, and maybe one defensive player as well, to be sent the Titans way in exchange for the number two pick. Whatever the Jets offer, the Eagles can be counted on to offer more.
