New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts game: score, winner, schedule

The NY Jets and Indianapolis Colts faced each other tonight in their first football game on the schedule of the NFL preseason, with both teams facing a number of questions that need answering heading into the 2014 regular season. Chief among them was whether the New York Jets go with veteran newcomer Michael Vick or second year second-round draft pick Geno Smith as their starting quarterback. Turns out they both got upstaged. Winner and final score below.

Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne is aiming to bounce back for for Indy from a brutal injury last season, but didn’t play. Geno Smith started for the Jets looked competent, as did his relief Michael Vick. But the star of the night at QB was third stringer Matt Simms, who was 13 of 18, albeit generally against scrubs. Andrew Luck played sparingly for the Indianapolis Colts, and his veteran backup Matt Hasselbeck played well. But the final score favored the home team.

The New York Jets were ultimately the winner over the Indianapolis Colts by a final score of 13-10, with the Jets winning the exhibition game on a fourth quarter field goal by kicker Andrew Furney. Next on the schedule for the Jets is at the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, August 16th. Next on the schedule for the Colts is a home game against the New York Giants, also on August 16th. Both are night games.

NFL preseason schedule 2014: NY Giants vs Buffalo Bills first game

The first game on the NFL preseason schedule gets underway in just two-plus weeks when the New York Giants take on the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The stadium holds a mere twenty-three thousand fans, but sits adjacent to the NFL Hall of Fame headquarters and draws attention to the venue. The Giants and Bills are in very different places heading into the season, and while the game will see only limited action from the starters on both sides, it’ll provide some early hints as to where each team is headed in the 2014 season.

The Buffalo Bills believe they’ve found their franchise quarterback in EJ Manuel, despite his non-stellar rookie season last year. They traded up in a big gamble to give him a potent weapon in wide receiver Sammy Watkins, while shipping out Stevie Johnson. This first preseason game on the schedule will give the quarterback and his new receiver the opportunity to get on the same page while giving Watkins the opportunity for a showy big play or two. But both players will be on the bench by the second quarter when the backups take over.

Meanwhile the NY Giants are hoping the comings and goings of their offseason put them in a position to get back to contending this season while quarterback Eli Manning is still in his prime, after struggling to a 7-9 losing record last year and missing the playoffs. As per usual there will be questions as to whether this is the final season for sixty-seven year old head coach Tom Coughlin, and as usual, he’ll slough off those questions while attempting to contend.

The NY Giants vs Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame Game, the first game on the NFL preseason schedule, will take place on Sunday, August 3rd, the only pro football game on the schedule for that weekend.. It will then be followed by a slew of other preseason games from August 7th through the 10th.
