Oakland Raiders draft QB Derek Carr with #36 pick: David Carr too?

The Oakland Raiders have selected quarterback Derek Carr in the second round of the NFL Draft, with the #36 pick overall and the fourth pick of the day. Carr was the best quarterback available on the board heading into day two, and the Raiders need a quarterback of the future. They already have veteran Matt Schaub as a stopgap starter. Now they’ll have to decide whether to sign Derek’s older brother, David Carr, as their third string quarterback as well.

Derek Carr fell to the Raiders after the Houston Texans passed on him; they already drafted David a decade ago. Houston is still looking for a quarterback prospect heading into the third round. Remaining prospects include Tom Savage.

The Raiders took Derek Carr after passing on Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel in the first round last night. The need for Carr was created after they gave up on Terrelle Pryor and traded him to Seattle earlier in the week. That came after they gave up on Carson Palmer the year before, and cut ties with JaMarcus Russell the year before. Oakland is hoping they’ve finally found their franchise quarterback in Carr.

Houston Texans Draft Round 2: David Carr vs kid brother QB Derek Carr

The Houston Texans head into tonight’s second round of the NFL Draft with the top pick and a glaring need at quarterback, and the top prospect remaining is Derek Carr - which would be perfectly uncontroversial if this were any other team. Carr is talented and has the makeup of a potential franchise quarterback, but his big brother is David Carr. That’s the same David Carr who was the very first draft pick ever taken by the Texans franchise, and whose painful failure set the team’s development back by several years. Even if the Texans regime can stomach the idea of making David Carr’s kid brother the new face of the franchise, longtime fans may not be able to accept Derek Carr so easily. And the tie-ins between the two of them get stranger.

David Carr is on record as saying that he’d like to become the backup quarterback for whichever team takes Derek in the draft. For Texans fans, that could mean not only having swallow having another quarterback named Carr under center, but having to actually accept David Carr himself back onto the team. If Houston does draft Derek Carr, it seems less likely they’ll also add David than if it’s some other team who drafts him. But with prospects like Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, and Teddy Bridgewater already gone in the first round, Houston may not have many other options for drafting a quarterback. At least Texans fans can dig out their old “Carr” jerseys and resume wearing them, if they haven’t already burned them.
