houston-texans

The Washington Redskins and Houston Texans head into today’s opening game on the NFL schedule both facing quarterback controversies, though each of a different kind, and both are entering the game with new head coaches. Jay Gruden takes over in Washington after the firing of Mike Shanahan, while Bill O’Brien takes over in Houston after leaving Penn State to take the place of the departed Gary Kubiak. Today’s game has an early start time and airs on a network TV channel.

The Texans dumped longtime starting QB Matt Schaub in the offseason but failed to replace him with a high draft pick, and will now be relying on journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter and newly acquired Ryan Mallett as their backup. Rookie Tom Savage is also on the Houston roster, but will not initially be counted upon for game action. The Redskins are once again going with Robert Griffin III at quarterback, after he had a strong rookie season followed by an injury-marred second season. Washington is hoping the new offensive system installed by Gruden will help allow RG3 to regain his previous form.

Today’s Washington Redskins vs Houston Texans NFL football game has a start time schedule of 1:00pm eastern time and airs on TV channel FOX in both local markets as well as some other regions.

Houston Texans vs San Francisco 49ers game tonight: score, schedule

houston-texans

The San Francisco 49ers faced the Houston Texans tonight in an NFL preseason schedule football game which saw both teams trying to figure out their quarterback position, though each under very different circumstances. The Niners thought they were all set at the position, re-signing Colin Kaepernick to a long term contract in the offseason, but so far he’s looked shaken in the exhibition season, even as his new backup Blaine Gabbert has looked moderately better. But tonight’s game was all about third stringer Josh Johnson, and the final score wasn’t close.

Gabbert struggled tonight for San Francisco, going 4 of 11 with one touchdown score before giving way to Johnson who promptly threw for three touchdown scores of his own for the Niners. Case Keenum and Tom Savage both looked weak for Houston, ensuring that veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will indeed be the opening day starter for the Texans.

The San Francisco 49ers were the winner of tonight’s game over the Houston Texans by a blowout final score of 40-13. The next game on the Niners schedule is next Sunday afternoon at the Dallas Cowboys, while the next game on the schedule for the Texans is at home against the Washington Redskins, also on Sunday afternoon.

Denver Broncos vs Houston Texans football game score, schedule

houston-texans

The Denver Broncos and Houston Texans went into tonight’s NFL 2014 preseason schedule football game each looking for different things. Denver won the AFC last year and is looking to refine its existing roster in the name of getting over the final hurdle. Houston is coming off an uncharacteristically poor season which cost the team its head coach and starting quarterback, and now starts over with newcomers in both positions. Only one starting QB looked strong tonight, and the final score was a close one.

Peyton Manning continues to appear to be in midseason form for Denver, going 21 for 27 with two touchdown scores and one interception for the Broncos. The team’s rushing game had 127 yards total, including thirteen yards on four carries from Montee Ball, who is returning from appendix surgery. Houston named Ryan Fitzpatrick its starting quarterback, but he took a step backward tonight with a mediocre 10 for 17 performance with no touchdown scores or interceptions. His backup, rookie Tom Savage, had a highly efficient game going 5 for 6 with two touchdowns - including the go ahead score with under a minute left.

The Houston Texans were the winner over the Denver Broncos by a final score of 18-17. The next game on the Texans schedule is at home against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. The next game on the schedule for the Broncos is at the Dallas Cowboys, also on Thursday night.

Houston Texans v Atlanta Falcons game: final score, schedule

houston-texans

The Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans squared off in an NFL preseason football schedule game tonight which saw one team locked in at its quarterback situation and the other team running a three ring circus at the position - but the results ended up looking the opposite by the time the final score rolled around. The Falcons are counting on Matt Ryan to help them bounce back from an uncharacteristically down season, while the Texans have been looking for any quarterback help they can get.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, the closest thing to a viable starting quarterback on the Houston Texans roster, showed up in a big way in tonight’s game for Houston. He as 9 of 12 with one touchdown and a passer rating of 126. On the other side of the ball Matt Ryan didn’t look sharp in his brief stint for Atlanta, as the Falcons had a poor night in general.

The Houston Texans were the winner over the Atlanta Falcons in tonight’s game by a final score of 32-7, with Atlanta getting shut out in the second half. The next game on the Texans schedule is at the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, while the next stop on the schedule for the Falcons is at home against the Tennessee Titans, also on Saturday night.

Houston Texans vs Arizona Cardinals game: score, schedule

houston-texans

The Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals faced each other tonight in their first NFL preseason football game on the schedule, with both teams trying to take a step forward, but in fairly different contexts. The Texans, normally contenders, washed out last season and are now starting fresh with a new coach and new quarterback. The Cardinals had a strong season last year, and are now trying to move into the postseason. In the end, the game was settled by a blowout score.

Houston failed to add a top quarterback in the draft, and the resulting hole in the roster was evident tonight as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick looked awful with a pair of interceptions and a passer rating of just fourteen. Backup Case Keenum didn’t look much better for the Texans. Carson Palmer had a perfect passer rating for Arizona, and his backups performed nearly as well.

The Arizona Cardinals were the winners by a final score of 32-0, the first shutout of the preseason. The next game on the schedule for the Cardinals is at The Minnesota Vikings on Saturday night. The next game on the Texans schedule is at home against the Atlanta Falcons, also on Saturday night.

Houston Texans Draft Round 2: David Carr vs kid brother QB Derek Carr

houston-texans

The Houston Texans head into tonight’s second round of the NFL Draft with the top pick and a glaring need at quarterback, and the top prospect remaining is Derek Carr - which would be perfectly uncontroversial if this were any other team. Carr is talented and has the makeup of a potential franchise quarterback, but his big brother is David Carr. That’s the same David Carr who was the very first draft pick ever taken by the Texans franchise, and whose painful failure set the team’s development back by several years. Even if the Texans regime can stomach the idea of making David Carr’s kid brother the new face of the franchise, longtime fans may not be able to accept Derek Carr so easily. And the tie-ins between the two of them get stranger.

David Carr is on record as saying that he’d like to become the backup quarterback for whichever team takes Derek in the draft. For Texans fans, that could mean not only having swallow having another quarterback named Carr under center, but having to actually accept David Carr himself back onto the team. If Houston does draft Derek Carr, it seems less likely they’ll also add David than if it’s some other team who drafts him. But with prospects like Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, and Teddy Bridgewater already gone in the first round, Houston may not have many other options for drafting a quarterback. At least Texans fans can dig out their old “Carr” jerseys and resume wearing them, if they haven’t already burned them.

NFL Jerseys: Jadaveon Clowney Texans #90, Johnny Manziel Browns #2

johnny-manziel-jersey

Like clockwork, jerseys for the biggest names in last night’s NFL Draft are already available from their respective teams’ online stores. That’s also required those players to have already chosen their jersey numbers for the upcoming season. Jadaveon Clowney has decided he’ll wear number 90 for the Houston Texans after becoming the first overall pick of the draft. And while Johnny Manziel fell far beyond the number two pick before ending up with the Cleveland Browns, he’ll be wearing jersey number 2 for the upcoming season. That is if nothing changes between now and then.

The trick for draftees choosing their jersey numbers is that they don’t know which team they’re headed to until their name is called, and their preferred number may not be available on that team. If the Texans already had someone else wearing jersey number ninety, Clowney would have had to quickly pick another number - and once chosen, those jersey numbers usually remain intact for the remainder of that player’s time with that team. However some players do end up changing jersey numbers during camp, sometimes because a high profile veteran signs with the team and wants to wear the same number they had with their last team. Cash transactions have sometimes been known to settle jersey number disputes.

But don’t look for Jadaveon Clowney to change his #90 jersey, or for Johnny Manziel to change away from #2, as there are already too many people buying those jerseys today, and a subsequent change would upset those enthusiastic fans. The NFL jerseys for Clowney, Manziel and others are available now in the NFL shop and are generally selling for about a hundred dollars apiece.

Houston Texans first round pick 2014 NFL Draft: three ring circus

houston-texans

The Houston Texans have the first overall pick in tonight’s NFL Draft, which is surprising enough considering that they’ve typically been playoff contenders. But after a season in which everything collapsed, their first round pick tonight represents an opportunity to put things back together. But in an even bigger surprise, there is no consensus this year as to who should go number one - or even a consensus on which quarterback should be at the top of the board. That means the Texans are facing a three ring circus tonight, with three viable yet risky options in front of them.

The first option for the Texans is to take high risk, high reward quarterback prospect Johnny Manziel and hope he turns out to be the franchise quarterback for the next decade. But if he goes bust, the team’s GM and coach are as good as fired in two years, because the team won’t be able to win without him as there is no viable Plan B at quarterback on the roster. The second option is to take Jadaveon Clowney, who is also a major risk due to character and effort concerns, but could be perceived as the safer route - though that’ll still leave Houston with no quarterback. The third option is to trade down for a pair of later first round picks so they can get a quarterback and defensive help.

Who will the Houston Texans take with their first round pick in tonight’s NFL Draft 2014? Start time and TV info can be found here.

Houston Texans number 1 draft pick 2014: Clowney vs Manziel vs trade

The Houston Texans have another week and a half to figure out what to do with the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, with three primary options in front of them. The first is to make Johnny “Football” Manziel their franchise quarterback. The second is to bolster their defense with Jadaveon Clowney. And the third is to trade the pick down in the hopes of using it to acquire multiple first round caliber players and booster both sides of the ball in the process. Here’s a look at all three options and their odds of happening:

Johnny Manziel

The Texans have no roadmap on their roster at quarterback, so if they take Manziel, he instantly becomes the franchise quarterback. That means Houston can only take him if they truly believe he can become a franchise caliber quarterback. His small stature, multi faceted playing style, high intelligence, and outsized ego all make him a high risk high reward prospect. If they take him and he flops, everyone involved gets fired. But if they pass on him and he succeeds elsewhere, the Texans will look just as foolish. The team may have no choice but to roll the dice on Manziel. But if they don’t…

Jadaveon Clowney

By some measure of coincidence, the top prospect in the draft who’s not a quarterback also comes with character concerns and a high risk high reward ratio. Clowney is a once in a generation defensive talent, but he was also accused of taking plays off at South Carolina and skipping entire games just to avoid injury. If the Texans are going to roll the dice with the number one pick, it’s more likely they’ll do it at quarterback, which means Manziel. But there is a third option.

Trade down

Trading down isn’t sexy, but if Houston doesn’t have enough faith in Manziel or Clowney to make either one the top pick, they could net a boatload of lower picks in a trade. The Rams used this tactic with the number two pick two years ago, and added half a dozen players to their roster in exchange for the pick that Washington ended up using on Robert Griffin III. By trading down, the Texans could pick up a later first round pick and use it on one of the other top quarterback prospects.
